My role Product Designer
Project Summary Video podcasting is a growing industry, however it normally takes more technical knowhow and editing than an audio podcast. This ingenious startup wants to change that.
Personas Podcasters, YouTubers, Bloggers, Journalists
The challenge Bringing an app concept to life for a startup means working quickly, without much support typically afforded with large organizations. The app brand, research, mood boards, personas, wireframes, mockups, and prototype are all on my plate. The other big challenge: creating a video editing flow for a mobile device.
Solution Using a pineapple camera icon with triangles as a reference to the ‘play’ button, the CastAway branding came together in no time. I then took that triangle and carried it through out as a background texture, and to give the app a subtle depth. The color palette is built to work with the pineapple branding, it also adds contrast to the dark background. For the user experience, we needed to make the application a one-stop place for recording, uploading, tracking, and promoting a video podcast. This included building a user onboarding flow, multi-user recording flow, features for different recording styles, a video editing flow, and a place for users to upload, track and promote their content.
Results After handing off my work to the ecstatic startup team, the limitations of online video recording and cloud computing have slowed the development of this app down significantly. Furthermore, the competition has cornered the market by skipping a mobile experience and focusing on the more easily developed desktop. Essentially leaving this project in limbo. Hopefully, as cloud video editing becomes more prevalent, it will bring this app concept back to life.
